Surrender to the Present

Updated: Jan 31, 2023

You are right here, right now reading this blog because several small moments occurred in your day that brought you to this moment. Our entire life experience up until this moment was created by other present moments. The present moment and "Now" is what makes up our life. Maybe you were dreading getting out of bed this morning and thinking idk how I will do this but now here you are, past that moment of suffering and moving on with your day. Maybe you labeled that moment as bad or good, neither is really true. The only truth is that those experiences were not in the past but only the present. The past belongs to that present moment in time and so does the future. The only experience we can act on and is the now. Any control we may have of the future (which isn't much) is determined by what we do, think and create in the now. What we don’t realize is the importance and un importance of the now. The importance is that the present moment is all we ever have. Every past decision you've made wasn’t in the past but it was in the present moment in which it occurred. The un importance is that a previous present moment no longer exists. Yes, you experienced it but it is now over and the only one holding on to that moment is you. If you find yourself holding on to past experiences, I invite you to feel those experiences for what they were and then release them.

Soften your gaze or close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Relax your eyes, your jaw, your shoulders, your hands, your legs and notice how your body feels. Now think of this experience or thought that you’re having trouble releasing and notice the sensations you feel in your body. Do you feel tense or the urge to fidget and move? Avoid the temptations and become the observer of your body’s sensations. Now send your breath into the areas of your body that are holding onto this experience. It’s okay if emotions arise, allow yourself to feel and then release them. Imagine yourself shedding this experience or thought like you're taking off a layer of clothing. Repeat to yourself, “I release this experience for what it is and I surrender to the now, knowing that this present moment is all I have.” Repeat this until you feel the tension in your body ease away. You can repeat this exercise as needed with this experience or reoccurring thought. It may take several times before your conscious mind is able to release the attachment to this thought but be patient with yourself. If it helps, you can remind yourself that you are only wasting your own time and energy by holding onto past moments and you are regretting then neglecting the present moment bc of this. The present moment is all we have and can been found at anytime by taping into your breath and body. When we practice living in the present moment our life becomes more intentional, and we create a heightened awareness to the beauty that is all around us. Take a breath and know that here we are, sharing this moment together.

Much love, Brie
